Introduction
There's something truly special about lighting a hand-poured candle — the warm glow, the gentle fragrance filling the room, the sense of calm it brings. But if you've ever watched a beautiful candle tunnel down the middle or noticed the scent fading too quickly, you'll know how disappointing it can be.
The good news? A little candle care goes a long way. Follow these simple tips and your candles will burn cleaner, last longer, and smell wonderful right to the very end.
Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn
This is the single most important thing you can do for your candle. Before lighting, trim the wick to around 5mm (about ¼ inch). A long wick creates a larger, flickering flame that burns through wax too quickly, produces more soot, and can cause the glass to overheat.
Use a wick trimmer, small scissors, or even your fingers once the wax has cooled. It takes seconds and makes a real difference.
Let It Burn Long Enough on the First Light
Wax has a "memory" — it will only melt as wide as it did on its first burn. If you extinguish a candle too soon, you'll create a tunnel that follows that narrow melt pool every time after.
On the first burn, let your candle burn until the entire surface has melted to the edges of the jar. For most candles, this takes 2–4 hours. It's worth the patience.
Keep Burns to 4 Hours Maximum
On the flip side, burning a candle for too long causes the wick to "mushroom" (develop a carbon build-up at the tip), which leads to a sooty, uneven burn. Aim for burn sessions of no more than 4 hours, then let the candle cool completely before relighting.
Store Your Candles Properly
Heat, light, and dust are a candle's enemies. Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade the colour and weaken the fragrance. If your candle came with a lid, use it — it keeps dust off the wax and helps preserve the scent.
Keep the Wax Pool Clean
If any wick trimmings or debris fall into the melted wax, remove them before they can cause uneven burning or a fire hazard. A small spoon or toothpick works perfectly once the wax has cooled.
Know When to Say Goodbye
When there's around 1cm of wax left at the bottom of the jar, it's time to retire the candle. Burning below this level can cause the glass to overheat. The good news? Many candle jars make beautiful little vases, pen pots, or storage containers once cleaned out.
